Pioneer HDJ-2000
Pioneer launched their new flagship headphones at BPM back in 2008. The HDJ-2000 top of the range model is set to become the bench mark with which all future headphones will be compared. They have an RRP of £195, which means the HDJ-2000s are priced considerably higher that other top of the range headphones, and I was keen to find out why.

The gig I chose to try out the headphones was a disco for kids from my local comprehensive school. I knew some of the kids who would be there, and so knew their music tastes! The cans would get the full range from thumping Bassline, through to the bubblegum-tastic Miley Cyrus, and everything in between. A fair tryout!

But how did they stand up to the rigors of life on the road? Well, first thing's first, time to open the box. The packaging for the HDJ-2000s is truly stunning, definitely conveying a feeling of quality. The outer box is printed in full colour with plenty of technical information on the back and an image of the headphones on the front together with the product name imprinted in silver. Inside this outer layer of packaging is another plain black box, simply embossed with the Pioneer Pro DJ logo, which opens to reveal the HDJ-2000s.

As well as the cans themselves, the box also contains a cable with a baby XLR on one end and 3.5mm jack plug on the other, together with a 6.5mm Jack adaptor. The baby XLR clips easily, but securely, into the headphones and both of the jack plugs are gold plated. A soft draw-string bag is also included for storing the HDJ-2000s, while this isn't intended to provide heavy duty protection, it will keep the headphones clean and offer some protection from scrapes and scratches.

After unpacking the box and resigning myself to the fact that I was never going to get them back in again I was ready to put them through their paces. I plugged everything in where it should go, placed the headphones on my head, and with great anticipation, pressed play.
