I was back for a weekend visit from college (you know the score, washing needed doing!) My sound system at that time consisting of a FAL system 50 console, a Metrosound Hi-Fi amp and 2x Squire 50w speakers was still at home (set up in my bedroom) but my usual lighting (two FAL Four way boxes and a brand new AS 85-4B controller) were back at my college room as I had become involved with the student union and had taken them down for the next WND (Wednesday Night Disco).
Quite early on the Saturday morning I got a knock on the door from a worried neighbour, her daughter had organised a big birthday party for that evening to be held in the local social club, their disco had cancelled and she wondered if I could help! Just thinking about the cash on offer was enough, and I said yes immediately. We then sorted out the details of venue, time etc. and we shook hands on the deal. As I closed the door I started to think properly; I had a good stock of records, a sound system but no lights (and no money to buy any, apart from the £5 deposit I had just taken!) Panic! - time for the home handyman to kick in.
The boxes seen here were originally a pair of Column speakers, the type that should have five small speakers and a transformer inside, they were faulty and had been taken down from that same venue weeks earlier and saved for me "Incase I could use the parts". I soon had the fronts off and had two nice empty, but heavily smoke stained, boxes. Now as I was a keen junk-shop buyer and hoarder of stuff I soon found a selection of bulb holders and some wire, made up some mounts for the lamp holders out of coat hanger wire and sprayed a load of 60w light bulbs with various colours of car paint (bulbs stolen out of the various rooms in my parents house!) The boxes were quickly painted black and I rushed off to the local Hardware shop, which was within walking distance, and found that I had just enough cash for the dimpled effect perspex that went on the front, luckily the boxes were very narrow and I managed to get both pieces out of one door sized sheet.
