BCX-DJ
Many of the software applications available to mobile DJs are based on a virtual version of a twin CD player system. Software developers recognised the potential of computer based play-out systems, looked at the gear DJs were currently using, and created systems that allowed digital music files to be played and mixed in a similar way. BCX-DJ has a very different background.

BCX is a digital play-out system developed over the period of ten years for use by radio stations. It was created to meet the needs of radio presenters, allowing playlisting of tracks, the inserting of jingles and the scheduling of adverts. BCX-DJ is a version of this software that has been created for mobile DJs and offers a different approach to digital DJing.

Prior to starting my review I had been given a quick demo, but other than that I was a complete novice. Installation literally took 10 seconds and following a quick re-boot I was able to launch the BCX-DJ application. I was greeted by a screen layout very unlike any other DJ software, leaving me at a loss as to what I should do to get started.

Of course we all know that none of us like resorting to any form of instructions, it simply isn't in a DJ's nature, although in this case I strongly recommend it. Once you've got to grips with BCX-DJ it does actually become very easy to use, however as it is so different from other DJ software applications it takes some getting used to. The relatively short manual was written by David Hoffman a radio presenter and DJ who knows the package and is able to offer instruction in a pleasant and clearly understandable manner. It is written in the form of one long tutorial, rather than an indexed reference, and therefore is best read from cover to cover. Having taken ten minutes to read the instructions I was soon up and running with my copy of BCX.
